RV Electrical Problems: 12V & 120V Troubleshooting Guide 2024

Around $500 in parts later — replaced the main breaker, cleaned all connections, checked the transfer switch — my 2007 Holiday Rambler Admiral SE still won't recognize shore power.

I'm pretty sure 110V is making it to the rig since I can measure it, but somewhere between the plug and my appliances, something's not happy. Energy management panel is dark too. What's the logical troubleshooting order here? I keep hearing about transfer switches and breaker panels but honestly don't know where to start without making things worse! …more

RV Shore Power Not Working: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Plugged into shore power at the campground last night and absolutely nothing happened — no lights, no AC, nothing. Breaker on the pedestal looks fine and my neighbor's rig is running perfectly on the same circuit. Starting to wonder if something fried inside the transfer switch. …more

Why Your RV Trips GFCI at Home But Not Campground: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Turned on my motorhome at 11 PM and it tripped the home GFCI again — works perfectly at campgrounds but I need this solved before departure.

I've tried different adapters, rewired a busted GFCI inside the rig, even turned off ALL the breakers including the main panel breaker. Still trips my house GFCI every time, whether it's the garage, side of house, or front outlets. What gives? Why would it work everywhere else but trip GFCIs at home? There's gotta be something specific causing this, right? …more

RV Automatic Transfer Switch Dead - AC Power Troubleshooting & Repair

Every time I flip the breaker, my 21-year-old coach's automatic transfer switch stays completely dead and I'm stuck with zero AC power. My Automated Engineering Corp ATS (model M10040A with M10041 display) is showing no AC on the LED readout even though shore power is definitely good.

I popped the cover off and confirmed power is getting TO the shore power terminals, but nothing's coming OUT to feed the AC system. Even manually pushed the contacts in and they stayed, but still no juice on the output side. Generator won't make it switch over either - it's like the whole transfer function is dead.

This thing has to be repairable right? Or am I looking at replacing the whole ATS unit? Really hoping someone has dealt with this before because losing AC in an RV is no joke! …more

How to Fix RV Transfer Switch Not Detecting External Generator - Complete Troubleshooting Guide

The automatic transfer switch on my 1999 American Eagle detects shore power and onboard diesel genset fine, but won't recognize my external portable generator — can I fix this for under $50? The generator runs fine and produces power, but the transfer switch doesn't trigger to use it.

What causes this issue and what are my options to get the ATS to work with an external generator? …more

Surge Guard 40250-RVC vs 40350-RVC Transfer Switch: Complete Comparison Guide

This 8-year-old transfer switch is getting sluggish during power transfers — worth repairing or should I just upgrade to a newer Surge Guard model? I currently have a Surge Guard 40250-RVC in my 2013 motorhome, but I'm having trouble finding that exact model for replacement. All I can seem to find available is the 40350-RVC model.

My current unit has started making a buzzing sound when connected to shore power. Everything still seems to work fine, but I've heard this might indicate the contacts are starting to fail. I'd rather replace it before it completely goes out and leaves me without power.

Can anyone tell me if the 40250-RVC and 40350-RVC are interchangeable? And should I be concerned about the buzzing, or is there anything I can check before replacing the whole unit? …more

Transfer Switch Ground Wire Not Connected - Winnebago View Fix

Transfer Switch Ground Wire Not Connected - Winnebago View Fix

Nobody expects to find their 2021 Winnebago View 24D transfer switch ground wire completely disconnected at 11 PM when you're supposed to leave tomorrow morning. While replacing a damaged shore power cord, I opened up the transfer switch box and discovered that the main coach power ground wire isn't connected to anything - it looks like it was just cut short with barely any copper showing.

The RV has been this way since we bought it new, and I've never opened this box before. I'm wondering if this could somehow be intentional (maybe related to how the inverter is wired?) or if this is a serious problem that needs fixing right away. Should I be concerned about safety issues, and is this something that typically happens at the factory?

I'd really appreciate some guidance from more experienced folks - I want to make sure I handle this correctly and safely. …more

How to Fix Firefly Battery and Victron System Conflicts in Your RV

Wondering if anyone else has dealt with a rental RV where the Firefly batteries and Victron system are constantly throwing conflicts I've never seen before. I have a 2020 Discovery LXE 40M that I've equipped with a complete Victron system - two Multiplus II inverters, Cerbo GX, and SOK lithium batteries. The problem is my coach's existing Firefly system is creating constant conflicts with the Victron equipment.

The AC units keep getting "shed" by Firefly, I'm getting random low voltage warnings even when my batteries are full, and my Auto Gen Start has completely stopped working. I've heard this might be related to waveform differences between the systems, but I'm not sure what that means or how to fix it.

I've seen some mentions of using dual transfer switches to isolate the systems, but I have no idea how that would work or if it would solve my Auto Gen Start issues. Has anyone actually resolved this Firefly-Victron nightmare? I really don't want to rip out thousands of dollars worth of equipment, but I need my RV systems to work properly! …more

Best 2000W Inverters for Grand Design RV: Complete Installation Guide

Noticed my Grand Design's warranty paperwork doesn't mention inverter installations — would installing a 2000W inverter void my coverage completely? except my dream apparently involves wanting to run actual appliances without firing up the generator at 6 AM and becoming "that neighbor" at the campground! 😅

My TT came with the prewired inverter loop (thank goodness, because my electrical skills peak at changing light bulbs), and I know it's wired with 10/2 Romex that can handle up to 2000 watts. Now I'm drowning in inverter options and getting analysis paralysis.

I'm looking for recommendations on the best 2000W pure sine wave inverters that'll play nice with my Grand Design's setup. Also completely confused about whether to go with an internal ATS for simplicity or bite the bullet and install an external transfer switch. Help a fellow glamper out - what are the top models you'd recommend, and what's the real difference between internal vs external switching options? …more

Dometic CCC2 Thermostat No Power: Troubleshooting & Fix Guide 2024

Opened up my new-to-me 1960 Safari RV only to find the Dometic AC unit's CCC2 thermostat has zero power and I'm completely lost. The AC unit is getting 120V power, but the thermostat displays zero power. My troubleshooting so far:
1) The inverter works great with 13.9V at the battery
2) The AC unit is receiving 120 power
3) The "telephone" line is also receiving power at both sending and receiving ends
4) The thermostat is registering zero power

I'm assuming this is a thermostat issue and not a fuse problem. What could be causing the CCC2 thermostat to have no power when everything else checks out? …more

RV Water Inlet Panel Light Won't Turn Off - Electrical Fix

Found that every spring when I de-winterize my Class A, I do my usual walkthrough to check all systems. This year I noticed something odd with the exterior water inlet panel - the little light that's supposed to help you see the connections in the dark is now staying on constantly. In the four years I've owned this rig, I've never really paid attention to when that light is supposed to come on or off. There's no obvious switch for it on the panel itself. What's got me wondering is that I've also been dealing with some inverter and transfer switch issues lately, and I'm curious if these problems could be related. The timing seems suspicious that both issues appeared around the same time. Does anyone know the normal operation for these inlet panel lights and whether electrical system problems could cause this kind of behavior? …more

RV Inverter vs Transfer Switch Problems - Diagnosis Guide

Nobody wants to deal with electrical problems on a long camping trip, but here I am trying to figure out what's wrong with my setup. The TV and two nearby outlets suddenly stopped working on our extended northern trip, even though I tested everything before departure. These outlets only work when I manually turn on my Magnum Dimensions CSW1012 inverter, despite being plugged into 50-amp shore power most of the time. I'm trying to decide between two possibilities: either my inverter is failing (it's started making intermittent high-pitched humming sounds) or the transfer switch (CSW-TS15-H) isn't automatically switching properly. Should I be running the inverter while on shore power anyway? And what's the best way to diagnose whether this is an inverter problem or a transfer switch issue? …more
